The School of East Asian Studies at The University of Sheffield would like to invite applications for postgraduate research scholarships for 2018/19 entry.
With a history dating back to 1963, the School of East Asian Studies (SEAS) is one of Europe´s leading centres of academic excellence for the study of contemporary East Asia, with research and teaching covering China, Japan and the Korean Peninsula. Each year the School offers a range of Postgraduate Scholarships to both Home/EU and Overseas students to help support them through their PhD.
- Faculty Scholarships
The University of Sheffield, Faculty of Social Sciences has funding for a significant number of PhD scholarships for 2018/19 entry. These include Doctoral Academy scholarships and ESRC scholarships available through our White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership competition.
Interdisciplinary and collaborative PhD applications in the following broad areas are strongly encouraged
- Cities, Environment and Liveability
- Security, Conflict and Justice
- Education Childhood and Youth
- Data, Communication and New Technologies
- Wellbeing, Health and Communities
- Sustainable Growth, Management and Economic Productivity
- Civil Society, Development and Democracy
These scholarships cover:
- Tuition fees
- An annual stipend to cover living expenses equivalent to UK Research Council rates
- Research Training Support Grant
All scholarships are available as a +3 (PhD) or a 1+3 (Masters and PhD), in combination with the MA Social Research
Eligibility
Our Doctoral Academy scholarships are open to applicants of any nationality and in any discipline within the Faculty of Social Sciences. Most ESRC White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership scholarships are open to UK and EU applicants; there may be limited opportunities for overseas students, and all applicants should check ESRC White Rose DTP guidance before making an application.
2. AHRC White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities
The White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities (WRoCAH) is a Doctoral Training Partnership of the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York. It is responsible for the distribution of AHRC-funded doctoral studentships for these universities and for the coordination of a doctoral training programme. WRoCAH is able to offer over 50 AHRC studentships per year to candidates with a place for doctoral study at the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield or York. Applicants for an AHRC studentship must have applied for a place of study in an eligible School, Department or Centre and may only apply for funding at one of Leeds, Sheffield or York.
Scholarships cover
- Full-time AHRC Competition Studentships for doctoral research are 3 years in duration.
- Awards are made for one year initially and renewable only subject to satisfactory academic progress.
- Awards must be taken up on 1st October 2018.
Awards will comprise UK/EU fees at Research Council rates and, for eligible students, a maintenance grant (£14,553 in 2017/18).
3. Sasakawa Foundation Scholarship
The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation’s Japanese Studies Postgraduate Studentship Programme was designed to support the development of Japanese studies in the UK. Scholarships are worth £10,000 and intended to be used for 1 year’s study at either taught postgraduate or research postgraduate level.

Our Research
Our research topics are constantly responding to developments in the disciplines, as well as to the dynamic changes in the East Asia region. We are able to supervise dissertations in a wide range of disciplines, including politics, international relations, political economy, business and economy, demographics, sociology, culture and film, language and literature, and modern history.
The focus of your PhD can be on Japan, Greater China, the Korean peninsula, or East Asia as a region.
Double Degree Programmes
In the School of East Asian Studies we offer two Double Degree Programmes to a small number of students each year. These programmes allow you to spend at least one year of your PhD studying and undertaking research at The Graduate School of Law, Tohoku University, Japan or The Department of Political Science and International Relations, Yonsei University, South Korea depending on your research interests. At the end of your degree you will be awarded a degree from Sheffield and Tohoku, or Yonsei University. Find out more about these programmes
